Three Poems of Bhisma Upreti

Disquiet

I

A drop of water

Little by little

Am being eroded to oblivion

As I descend drop by drop

The disquiet inside of me seems to grow

I wonder

When will I transform into an ocean?

Translated by- Sarthak Karki

Death

Like my shadow

Invisible in brightness

You are always with me

Teaching me about

The pleasures of life

Love

And the secrets of creation.

You are my true friend

Thinking about you

I keep far away from sins

I see my destination

I realize my duties.

Death!

It is because of you that I am alive.

Translated by- Sarthak Karki

Beauty of Life

'Please take our photo, uncle'.

Children, who looked like budding faces of aspirations,

spoke to me, their voice

had an aura of hope and brightness.

I stood them in a row

and took their photo.

I looked at the photo

and at them.

But in the photo

missing was the lustre

that was in their eyes;

missing was their smile

and the colour of it;

missing was the voice of their heart

and the purity and warmth.

In the photo

there were some figures

and merely a photo.

I took the photo

but couldn’t portray

the inspiring

beauty of their life.

Translated by- Mahesh Paudyal
